USD 2.6 billion !! Flora De La Mar (FDLM) yet to be found.
An estimated 54,000 Kg of gold or USD 2.6 billion was on board the famous flower of the sea ie that what it means FDLM the largest Portuguese ship that conquered Malacca in 1511 but after looting Malacca the ship was shipwrecked about Aceh strait of Malacca & yet to be surfaced by Malaysian gov. It was the largest looting in the history of Portugal.
Malacca was a great maritime port in its time, able to cater about 2000 ship at one time & nearly 90 languages were spoken, an international business center of its time, some say greater than
Venice & Lisbon
The replica of the FDLM can be visited in the UNESCO world heritage center city Malacca. The original FDLM was built in Lisbon in 1502 weighed 400 tons it was the best ship in its time in the west but had its downfall, the huge ship was difficult to be piloted & had to go for repairs in Mozambique due to strong current. After going thru many times of repair it lastly joins Portugal 8th Armada in the cause of conquest under Afonso de Albuquerque’s. The FDLM supported the conquest of Goa in 1510 & Malacca in 1511.
The replica Ship is a part of the maritime museum with an entrance fee of only RM 10/pax compare to the fantastic work to build the ship. One of the best parts of the ship is the Captain’s room. Opposite to it in the map room.
Imagine how it would have been piloting the huge ship at the average speed of 4 knots or about 7.5km/hr. could do better on cycle. In the middle of a vast open ocean…
The most bottom part of the ship is the detention room. The place Afonso kept many Malays with the expertise to be brought back to Portugal to serve the king. On a normal voyage, various race/clan slaves were captured & kept in this congested place waiting for their fate.
The ballast or heavy material like stones was kept at the belly of the ship to steady it. The captain is the most important person on the ship & solely in charge of the ship like a king with absolute power on the ship his job is to make the mission successful for the shipowner & the king.
Across the road is the modern maritime museum a navy ship no. 3143 displayed outside it is accessible after visiting indoor navy displays.
