
It’s common, Malaysian coffee shop to have toast bread slice with Kaya spread. In general Europeans take bread with butter & jam. Malaysian Chinese coffee shops especially, toast bread served with marjerin/butter & KAYA spread. It goes even better with Benggali bread slice. Wow superb !!
The Malay word for ‘Kaya’ literally means Rich / Wealthy. In the pass rich people wanted to show off (but not limited then only) the Chinese Baba Nyonya are such & wanted to show off their wealth in many elaborate ways one of the ways was by preparing Kaya. Prepared from coconut milk, yellow egg yolk, sugar (palm). Steam cooked in a unique tip less cone shape wooden container. The shape allows steam circulate more dense on top thus forming golden thick paste.
When common people saw rich people using this golden spread for cooking & spread they believed that person is so rich able to eat gold. The word Kaya got picked up from there.
