Why visit Turtle Conservation?
Hi guys this is Johnson for JohnsonMalaysia.com welcome to my country, Malaysia I’m a local tour guide in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia. Today let me share my visit to Cherating Turtle Sanctuary. Turtles are an auspicious creature of the Chinese people, it means longevity. We know turtle out live human life span in the good non trader. They are a magnificent creature created by Almighty GOD. The sanctuary is located just next to a worldwide famous club ie. Club MED in Cherating, Pahang.
Leather back turtle. Where?
The turtle conservation was started about 40 years ago. It is sadly the large leather back turtles which I heard when I was still is primary school now have stop coming to lay eggs in east coast. The awareness of the lost is too expensive lesson to learn by the next generation. The remaining species cannot be neglected if not same fate may happen to Penyu Agar or Green turtle or scientific name Chelonia Mydas.
Public not allowed-time
The Green Turtle comes along the beach (3.5km long including club MED) from April to September. The turtle comes to seashore at night, public is not allowed to be at beach after 7:30pm till 7am as the turtle can be disturbed emotionally, but if you are staying in the sanctuary you can ask permission to observe. Check with JohnsonMalaysia.com for tour arrangement.
The Green turtle travels 1000s of kilometers from the it’s feeding grounds to their birth place to lay eggs how they can find their way home science has no idea yet but I am sure GOD WHO created this turtle knows fully.
Waiting till dark
As they approach Cherating beach early before dark. They will rest in the ocean floor till dark and make their journey to the breach. They use, rear leg to make a horizontal tunnel at the shore in a fascinating circular motion and dig about 2 feet deep to lay their eggs. It lays about 60 to 80 eggs, Mr. Jeffry at Turtle Sanctuary said, sometimes it can lay up to 120 eggs.
Amazingly, this turtle comes back about 5 times in a row of 10 days to lay eggs but each time the number drops. Each egg is about the size of a ping Pong ball. The sanctuary mission is to preserve the turtle population; hence it has a hatchery and ponds to give an early care. According to Mr. Jeffery the eggs is exhumed from mother turtle’s original location and reburied at hatchery for 40 to 60 days.
The Green Turtle, unfortunately often gets themselves trapped in fishermen’s nets. A grown-up turtle becomes very aggressive when trapped & can damage fishing net, sadly the fishermen will knock them to death to save their nets can we get angry with fishmen? We feel sorry for them too, they need to feed their children.
You can see the area with cylinder netting in the video those are matured eggs to be hatched any time. The natural temperature is about 30c. The newly born baby turtles are black in colour & about 3in. They can become food for monitor lizard & other bird of prey therefore the sanctuary monitors for one week before releasing at the shore. The baby turtle has to move or crawl by themselves to the sea because they have an inbuilt sensor which will bring them back to the same location when they are mature to lay eggs.
