The National Monument and Sir Cliff Richard
Sir Cliff Richard was here !! ? 😀 For many, his song brings many memories. On November 1961 Sir Cliff Richard landed in Malayan (Former name for Malaysia) Airport for one day concert at Merdeka Stadium, which was sponsored by some of the major companies namely Fraser Navea F&N ….. but what Sir Cliff Richard had to do with our National Monument ?
Our National Monument which cost $1.5 million, then did not come easily. The New Malaya was born in 1957. We did not have much cash to spare for a bronze monument.
Our 1st PM Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj was inspired after his visit to US and saw the United States Marine Corps War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial monument) and he believed we should have a national monument for our victory after 12 year struggle against communism and won.
To raise funds Malayan came forward to contribute in any which way to be a part of this national project. The government topped up $200 000 but the much balance from various Malaysian and even Malaysia working abroad.
Sir Cliff Richard also gave $ 1000 from concert that he performed with the group Shadow at Merdeka Stadium in 1961. As Malaysian tourist guide when I guide tourist to national monument it is still a great site to be admired. 😁 👏👏👏👏
